Maslow's hierarchy of needs

Abraham Maslow proposed a theory that is focused on the fulfilment of human needs in order to develop motivation. Physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization requirements are all motivational needs. To begin, physiological needs such as food, shelter, and clothing are the most important. These requirements can be met by obtaining a pay and wages, as well as creating a safe working environment. Second, safety concerns both physical and financial security(Kioko, 2018).

This demand can be met by the company by offering benefits such as retirement programs. Finally, social needs refer to a person's desire to belong and be accepted by others. Employees desire positive interpersonal relationships in order to participate in collaboration. Fourth, esteem wants are the desires to be recognized by others, such as societal value, which eventually leads to self-respect and prestige. Finally, self-actualization refers to a person's desire to reach their full potential and self-satisfaction.

According to the hierarchy of needs hypothesis, wants that have been met no longer have enough appeal to inspire personnel. The dominance of the higher order wants begins when the lower needs are met to a certain extent. If hotel managers wish to encourage their staff, they must first determine whatever level of the hierarchy the employee is currently pursuing. The management may then concentrate on preparing the opportunity to meet the demands at that stage or higher. This is a really important aspect. We frequently observe hotel employees thinking negatively about what the management has planned for them to level up. I feel this is a good place to start(Gunter, 1969).

I think it would be better to do a small analysis on the model with regards to the current status that the hotel industry is in, and is as follows:
• When employees are out of the workplace, it's more difficult to attend to their fundamental health and comfort.
• People perform their best work when they have a safe environment and the necessary tools. Hotels should discover methods to provide basic hotel infrastructure to its employees.
 • Physical safety has received a lot of attention at the hotel over the last year: improved cleaning and airflow, social distance restrictions, and frequent health inspections. Even after the epidemic has passed, individuals returning to hotels will be aware of the dangers of congregating, and savvy hotel management will take efforts to reassure them.
• However, a sense of security extends beyond the physical surroundings to how hotel management treats their employees. Is it possible for employees to speak up? Does the remote meeting format encourage everyone to participate? The structure of remote meetings — giving the agenda ahead of time, stopping for thought and replies, and ensuring that workers are encouraged to follow up later — may go a long way toward accommodating quieter, more introverted employees(SiteMinder, 2018).

As a take home note, Maslow's Theory is a general theory of inspiration that states that the desire to meet wants is the guiding variable in creativity. Maslow's Theory is engaging and based on human needs and how they might be met. According to Maslow, there is a logical progression of needs from lower to higher.

  1. Nice post Melanie. Interesting discussion on the Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory. This suggests that managers recognize deprived needs may impact negatively on behavior and attitude. As well as opportunities to meet demand, may affect positively on incentive (McGrath A., 2017).

    1. Thank you Dumindu. It is also important for managers to understand that the basic needs of a human are not always hierarchical or sequential. Sometimes, our needs have the ability to flourish or change through time (Fowler, 2014).

  2. Hi Melani. Very descriptive and vastly explained blog about the theory. According to Smith & Cronje (1992), Maslow's theory is explained based on the notion that people aspire to achieve more in life, and their demands are prioritized according to their importance.

    1. Hi Ruwan, Yes that's right. However, according to some critics it has been stated that there are some gaps in the theory for lacking cultural and social factors which differentiates people from different regions of the world Happy (2021).
